Four World Championship Fights in Just 28 Days, Live on SHOWTIME®

Showtime's Nick Charles, the blow-by-blow announcer on "ShoBox: The New Generation" since the series' inception in 2001, is returning to ringside after battling bladder cancer since August, the network announced.

Charles was diagnosed with stage IV urothelial carcinoma during the summer but announced Friday that he is 80 percent in remission and that his doctors have given him the go-ahead to resume working.

He will be back on the air for the Jan. 29 "ShoBox" -- which will be headlined by bantamweight prospect Chris Avalos facing Jose Nieves at the Tingley Auditorium in Albuquerque, N.M. -- working with analysts Steve Farhood and Antonio Tarver. Charles turns 64 the following day.

"I never really lost hope and faith that I'd be back on 'ShoBox' working with the finest people I know professionally and personally," Charles said. "The boxing community has been overwhelmingly supportive. Their inspiration has moved me deeply. As important to me though are the fans of 'ShoBox' who have expressed to me beyond all expectations their concern and encouragement through a difficult illness."

It was an entertaining night of boxing at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, N.M. though the real highlight was seeing Showtime boxing analyst Nick Charles return to work. Charles who had been out do to a fight with cancer, looked about as good as we've seen him in months and it was a treat to see him doing what he loves most.

As for the fisticuffs of the evening, unbeaten Chris Avalos (15-0, 12 KOs) registered yet another knockout when he stopped Jose Nieves at 2:20 of the 4th round in the main event. He appeared to be having issues with Nieves in the opening round as he was getting outboxed but stepped on the gas from the 2nd round forward and dominated Nieves before getting the stoppage.

Coming up this Friday night on Showtime’s ShoBox: The New Generation, former world champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley 36-12-1 (21) looks to get back in the win column as he takes on the once beaten Freddy Hernandez 27-1 (18) in the night’s main event.

Corley, who at one time held the WBO Light Welterweight title, and has faced the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto, and Randal Bailey (Just to name a few), has a goal of becoming a two-time world champion, and his journey begins this Friday night on Showtime.

In this exclusive interview, Corley speaks out on his upcoming fight, as well as touching on other topics in his career, enjoy.

Benny Henderson Jr.: You have the fight coming up this Friday night on Showtime against Freddy Hernandez, your thoughts on that match-up?

DeMarcus Corley: I am going into a little bit of deeper water as a welterweight, not a weight that I normally fight at, I have a game plan, let my hands go be first and get the victory. I am not taking anything from him, but I don’t think he has been in with a type of fighter or at the level that I am at right now. He has a disadvantage comparing to me having an advantage over him, I have no problem with making an adjustments with the height and size.

Edwin Valero by mid-to-late-round KO over Antonio DeMarco: DeMarco is a well-schooled, disciplined young contender with good technique and a lot of heart.

But the Mexican southpaw is a slow starter who likes to engage more than he should. We won't see the sharpest version of Valero, who has yet again changed trainers.

But he's motivated to defend his green belt in Mexico and on national television -- in Mexico and the U.S. I think he either catches DeMarco cold with one big shot, or he gradually breaks the younger man down by forcing him to the ropes and beating on his arms and body.

DeMarco will be game and he'll get his shots in, but I think his willingness to exchange with Valero will cost him.

Edwin Valero KO 7 Antonio DeMarco: I think DeMarco is a top-drawer talent. He boxes well from the outside, he can crack, and he I believe he has improved considerably over the past few fights.

Then you look at Edwin Valero and you wonder what is so special about him? He looks like he's slow as molasses. But Valero has hands of kryptonite, and once he has timed a guy and figured him out, he just walks him down and beats him up.

I think DeMarco starts out well, maybe builds an early lead on the cards. He may even be leading when the fight ends. But after a few rounds, Valero will have him figured out, and his heavy punches will start finding their target until eventually DeMarco is overwhelmed. Valero TKO 7.

NASCAR Sprint Cup

Match scheduled:
Start: 05-02-2010 from 20:00 (MT)
NASCAR Sprint Cup PRACTICE #1, Daytona 500, Daytona, FL

Kvapil started Sunday’s race from the 30th position on the starting grid. He was directly in front of Yates Racing teammate, David Gilliland. The green flag waved at 3:41 pm to begin the golden anniversary of the historic race and Jimmy Johnson led the field. He quickly lost the lead to Michael Waltrip on the opening lap.

Kvapil dropped back towards the rear of the field in order to see how the No. 28 was handling on the turns. He did not want to risk being caught in an accident early in the race. The front of the field battled for positions from the opening laps, but Kvapil’s plan was to stay out of trouble then make a move later in the race.

Kvapil called in over team radio at lap 17 and told the crew the K&N Filters Ford was handling the turns, but the track surface was slippery due to the high temperatures. At lap 28, Kvapil said he felt as though the rear of the car was loose.

The No. 28 K&N Filters team decided to pit on lap 37 for four tires, fuel and an adjustment to the track bar. Handling continued to be an issue for the K&N Filters team and on lap 59 Kvapil said the car felt free while entering the high-banked turns of Daytona and felt light on the exit of the turns.

The sun began to drop behind the grandstands on the front stretch of the speedway around lap 77. The front half of the track was shaded and the track surface temperature was dropping.

On lap 80 the first caution of the day came for debris on the surface of the track. Crew chief Todd Parrot called Kvapil to pit road on lap 83. After the restart on lap 85, Kvapil held steady in his position in the field and was able to move up to 30th on lap 114. He called in over radio communications and said the car’s handling was taking a turn for the worse and the track surface continued to drop.

The team made another green flag pit stop on lap 122 and the K&N Filters Ford Fusion received four fresh tires and fuel. Kvapil started to gain positions immediately upon returning to the field. The No.28 moved up to 25th by lap 139 before the handling concerns returned.

JACK ROUSH CONTINUED – WHAT HAS THE 17 TEAM, AND MATT, DONE TO WIN THE FIRST TWO RACES? “Well, Drew has brought magic to the team. His dad was a coach and he played real competitive sports in high school, so he know how to build a team, he knows how to capitalize on the energy within a team and we needed that. We had all the right people with the right skill sets on the team, but we just need somebody to create the magic and Drew has done that. We had the same cars last year, and Matt was the same guy that he was last year – he sure didn’t learn anything over the winter because he didn’t have the chance to drive these cars as much as normal. I’m celebrating with Drew the fact that – he needed a little help with the champagne. I took a little hit in the Victory Circle because I gave him my champagne bottle, which I had all primed. That’s what happened. Drew got me. We’ll credit what we’ve got going for us early here as the Drew factor, and look forward to carrying it forward. But with way that Carl had won and with the way Jamie has been running and the way Greg has won, and way David has been coming, certainly there is an expectation on my part we were going to be fastor in these races until we get to Martinsville, and the guys snuck off to the Little Rock there at Rockingham race track, and that is one of the places where you can go and test a little bit, and we think we even got something for Martinsville that we haven’t had before. So, I’m real optimistic about what’s going to happen in the first handful of races. The idea of winning Daytona under rain circumstance was a surprise. It caught me totally off-guard. Of course, I was afraid it was going to finish under rain and I was hoping it would win, but I certainly didn’t want to read the press and have two rainouts and having one of our guys be the benefactor.”

MATT KENSETH CONTINUED – THE LAST 20 LAPS WERE VERY ENTERTAINING. DID YOU THINK JEFF GORDON HAD WHAT HE HAD FOR THOSE LAST 20 LAPS? “I thought he was going to pass. I kind of have a bad habit, I guess, people call me a pessimist, I think I’m more of a realist, but when we took off the run before that we got in the lead and we ran some real fast laps and we left Jeff by 15, 20 car lengths or something like that and in the middle of that run he just ran right by me and took off. Greg would go by me, took off. I couldn’t do any better than that.

MATT KENSETH CONTINUED – “I was doing the best I can. So I don’t even know if they adjusted, but that got us in the front again, which obviously was a big key to it, and we took off. Right away I could feel it was better, but I didn’t think it that much better and I was getting looser as I ran and with as many laps that were left I honestly thought we were going to be too loose at the end and he was going to catch us. I couldn’t get away from him that time and then he got right on my bumper and I thought, ‘I’m about over,’ but I guess they tightened his up a bit and got too tight, and I was able to hang there. These things are real sensitive and they just made the perfect adjustment, and had the perfect pit stop.”

JACK ROUSH CONTINUED – WHY HAVE YOUR TEAMS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL HERE, NO MATTER WHO’S DRIVING OR ON THE CREWS? “It does matter who drives the cars. I’m blessed with having real fast company that let me hang around with them. Looking at Matt Kenseth, it is a fact that Matt Kenseth would not be part of our program I wouldn’t have the honor to be involved with Matt, I’m sure, if it hadn’t been for Mark Martin. And Mark looked at Matt and Mark has had template set on the driver temperament and really what the nature of our strategies have been at mile-and-a-half and the two-mile race tracks. Those were his needs, and I certainly learned what his interests were and figured out what to give him to be successful, and that’s helped us. It takes three things to make these cars win: It takes technology that the manufacturer brings to the table, and in our case that’s Ford Motor Company; it takes NASCAR giving you a template set for the body shape and the engine parameters that is competitive; and it takes a driver that can close the deal. And I’ve been fortunate to have those things. The affiliation with Ford Motor Company has been a big factoring it over the years, and the crew chiefs, like Drew, have prepared the cars ideally and the cars have been driven with great enthusiasm and with great effect.”
