The road to Rugby World Cup 2011 resumes this weekend with European teams battling to book their place in New Zealand.
Since the global qualifying process kicked off in April 2008 with Cayman Islands versus Trindad and Tobago, 148 matches have been played across six continents and there are just 37 matches to be played before the final four qualifiers for the world's third-largest sporting event will be known.
With Russia beating Rugby World Cup 2007 participants Portugal 18-14 in Lisbon last year, the return match in Sochi this weekend looks set to be one of the most important in the history of Russian Rugby and one of the most critical in the global qualifying process.
The European Nations Cup winner (Europe 1) will join Argentina, England, Scotland and the Play-Off winner in Pool B at RWC 2011, with the runner-up (Europe 2) slotting into Pool C with Australia, Ireland, Italy and the USA. The RWC dream will still be alive for the team finishing third in the European Nations Cup via the regional and cross-continental Play-off structures.
Attention will turn to Asia in April when the HSBC Asian 5 Nations gets under way involving Japan, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Korea and the Arabian Gulf.
Japan, the only Asian nation to grace the Rugby World Cup stage and hosts of the 2019 tournament, are the favourites to take their place in Pool A alongside hosts New Zealand, France, Tonga and Canada.
The final qualifier will be determined by single match semi-finals in July, which will see Tunisia face the side to negotiate the European play-off rounds and Uruguay meet the HSBC Asian 5 Nations runners-up.
