Hunted and haunted, Tim Johnston suddenly turned. Under privileged protection in the Federal Court, he began to air the lingering ghosts of arguably the biggest fraud in Australian corporate history.
The hearing, which started in December and resumed in Perth last week, was supposed to be into Johnston's alleged wickedness - not that of others. A liquidator was seeking answers as to why Johnston's fuel technology company Firepower had collapsed, losing an estimated $100 million of investors' money.
Johnston, the central character in a modern morality tale whose scale is almost unimaginable, had been on the run overseas for almost two years after the collapse. Now, with his unexpected return on Melbourne Cup eve, he was in court - having been dragged there, grey and gaunt and under the threat of arrest - and the latest chapter of an already sensational story is unfolding.
